150 years ago: An Ulcombe wedding

On May 16, 1867, John Walne of Lenham, Kent, married Emily ‘fourth daughter of the late Mr James Hatch, of Chegworth, Ulcomb (sic)’. Rev. P Butler was assisted by Rev. W Brown. (Maidstone Journal and Kentish Advertiser; 27 May 1867; Page 5)

The Walnes of Lenham are descended from John Walne born in Starston, Norfolk – part of the East Anglian Walne heartland.

Ulcombe and the Hatch family go back a long way it seems, with connections to the local bell foundry. It remains to be seen whether Emily Hatch was directly or indirectly connected to the famous company but somebody reading this blog may already have done the research…! It was also not the first Walne-Hatch marriage.
