Historical weekend: some favourite images

For my 30th, my husband let me indulge in a bit of historical tourism. Here are a few of my favourite shots, taking in Hampton Court Palace, the Runnymede memorials, Box Hill, Birling Gap, Battle and Bodiam Castle (links below).

Iconic, this one.

In the gardens.

The ‘new’ side.

Lady Mary Wortley Montagu – very important in the story of smallpox, and therefore a favourite of mine!

Runnymede Air Forces Memorial, dedicated to all those with no known grave.

Inscription on one of the windows.

It is the 800th anniversary this year

Box Hill – the fort.

Again at Box Hill, an unusual MI.

Sunset at Birling Gap.

“My ancestor came over with Willy the Conk”

Battle Abbey.

Bodiam Castle.

Perhaps my favourite of the lot – like all good fortresses, guarded by a duck!

…and all of course powered by the likes of the above (this example from Box Hill!)

Would also love to say thanks to two wonderful hotels – The Powder Mills Hotel in Battle (a converted gunpowder factory no less) and The White Horse in Chilgrove, which boasts fabulous food and beautiful baths.
